ŞÜFRÜ ANDAÇ

Stanford graduate and Turkish engineer Burak Göktürk has sold the website he developed, Like.com, to Google for $100 million.

Like.com launched four years ago and focuses on fashion and shopping. The site became popular due to its scanning service, which identifies items used by celebrities and allows users to find the exact item or a similar match.

Göktürk, 34, developed new technology for visual searches and artificial intelligence and holds copyrights for many innovations in these fields. After starting the business with his partner, Munjal Shah, six years ago in California, Göktürk then started working on risk sharers and Internet giants. He aims to bring a new dimension to virtual shopping habits.

Currently, the website is active in the U.S and the U.K. as like.com and like.co.uk. Studies are ongoing to launch the website in other languages.

Göktürk implemented the concept of a “visual-search-based smart shopping website” with like.com by undertaking the technological aspect of the business as the chief technological officer, or CTO, of the firm. His partner took care of the administrative aspect as CEO.

Way above Google

Although Google uses visual-based search, it could not develop an application or service close to what Göktürk had developed and patented. After a series of negotiations, Google purchased the website.

Göktürk will continue his position in the administration of the firm but he will now focus on expanding the business to a larger scale and applying the technology to other fields in Google’s search pool in addition to fashion.
